This afternoon was the cast party for the show we just finished. A surprising number of people didn't come--there was a good crowd there, but none of the leads came and quite a few of the chorus members were missing. It was nice to sit and chat, and we did get to have a board meeting which was very needed, but I'm kind of glad to be home. I don't feel like I'm very good at small talk, so these kinds of gathering are usually painful for me.
I spent a lot of time having a conversation with THE most interesting 9 (maybe 10) year old. This kid was so easy to talk to--and very interesting. She was there with her grandparents (they are my age) since her mom was at work, and I could tell she was completely bored. She didn't know anyone, and there weren't any other kids her age at the party. I smiled at her a couple of times, and asked her if she was bored, and eventually she came and sat by me on the couch. We talked for the longest time--she was really interesting. If I had a little girl, I would so want her to be like this kid.

A few thoughts about having or attending a party. It's summer, and people were bringing food to share, and their own drinks. And there was no cooler with ice for drinks. People brought bottles of beer, bottles of water, and no cooler. Only an already full fridge. To me this is a basic item you have at a summer party-- a cooler for drinks.

When I found out about the party last week and emailed to ask what I should bring, I was told, "Oh, anything you want". I emailed back and asked if we were grilling, were people bringing more substantial dishes, what was the plan. "Oh, people are just bringing whatever". Well guess what we had the most of-- cakes, brownies, cookies, more cake, more brownies, rice krispie treats, and more cake. I had brought brownies but I also brought a green salad with lettuces, strawberries, walnuts and red onions. The salad was a big hit. I just wish they had been a little more assertive on what to bring.

poorly planned parties usually turn into fiascos, that's why i'm so fussy when i plan things. sounds like your salad was kind of a saving grace for everyone's blood sugar levels ;)

If it's going to be a dessert buffet- and you know, I'm a believer in dessert- then let's call it a dessert buffet and GET DOWN! Next time, pack a sub sandwich in your purse and announce, "I was afraid this was gonna happen..." as you open wide. HA!
