Guess what we did today on the FIRST day of school?
It's bad enough when you hear the fire alarm any time, but to hear it on the first day of school while kindergarteners are at lunch (for the very first time) and no one knows who belongs where yet is unnerving. We do know it wasn't a drill, but I left at 12:40 today so didn't hear the story. I do know the fire engine came, so that meant something.
I feel like I did nothing today-- but a lot got done. One of my volunteer moms came in and the plan was for us to work together to sort through the picture book bins to see where we could shift books to make them less crowded. A big job, yes, and I was dreading it so much. As it turns out, we decided to rearrange the picture book area completely and it looks so different now. I haven't decided if I like it--I know I don't hate it, and it has some good things about it, but it's so different. And then she did all the sorting and moving of books that we were originally going to do--but by herself! She said she wanted to do it by herself-- and secretly I was glad! It took her about 3-1/2 hours (including the fire alarm!). I kept asking her what I could do, but she wanted to do it herself. Okay by me!
I spent 2 hours at another school helping the new librarian I'm working with and that was a waste. The goal was to get all the students imported into the circulation system, and while you don't have to be a rocket scientist to do it, it's still complicated. We kept having problems, then her keyboard and mouse stopped working, and finally I said "enough!" and told her I'd come back tomorrow. The thing is, I haven't even had time to do this same job at my own school yet-- ack! I keep wanting to just do it for her---but that's not really a very good mentoring strategy.
Best thing today? Walking into the library this morning and finding flowers from RR for the first day of school. So so so thoughtful. If she wasn't married, I think I'd have to marry her.
