Last week I was watching a cooking show---one most of you have probably watched (if you haven't, you should, it's very useful). It's the one on PBS where they test a recipe a ton of times, changing measurements, kinds of ingredients, etc.. to finally come out with the best version. They also have equipment reviews (kind of like Consumer Reports) and lots of cooking and baking tips.

So last week they made an amazing looking lemon bundt cake. Viewers had written in and asked for suggestions on how to make sure the lemon flavor remained strong after baking a cake, and another viewer had asked about how to prevent a bundt cake from drying out during baking. The cake they made looked so good--so I wanted the recipe. I go to the website and find the recipe, but before they give it to you, you have to go through all these refusals for a magazine subscription. I finally got the recipe and now I'm not even sure I want to make the cake anymore! There was a huge list of other recipes, so I clicked on a few and every time you had to go through several pages of refusals for a magazine subscription--but they were all different cooking magazines. Not ones you normally see, but ones through this show, I guess. It will make me think twice before wanting one of their recipes again.
And that lovely lemon picture up there in the corner? I did you guys a favor. I actually found one of a dried up, shriveled black-inside lemon that I was going to use, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. It was nasty, and this one is so refreshing-looking.

I have been craving lemon cake- HOMEMADE, NOT FROM A MIX, and have gone so far as to buy a bottle of lemon extract. I also bought a piece of lemon "diner" cake from Safeway- but it disappointed. Tasted like mix.

Well there you go-- you don't use extract! You use lemon zest! When i do finally make the cake, I'll make sure you get some!

america's test kitchen is a great show...it's too bad that they drive you to the verge of subscribing when you want only one measly recipe. do you ever go to allrecipes.com? i think it's a pretty good resource.
